Thanks to a recent restoration this a rare chance to catch Michael Cimino’s directors cut of his notorious Western. The film was plagued by a troubled shoot resulting in an increasingly extravagant budget. Eventually it was released in a butchered cut to much critical derision, effectively ending Cimino’s career and bankrupting the film’s studio.
Removed from the production issues and with over an hour’s worth footage added back, the film is finally being revisited with suggestions that it is a misunderstood masterpiece.
