A talk by Dr Graham Cooper describing the rationale for
the enclosure of the uplands over the centuries. He will
show how the style and course of dry-stone walling
differed in the various enclosure periods and will discuss
the agricultural and social impact of enclosure. Examples
from Bowland, the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District
will be discussed, one wall probably dating back to the
12th century! The talk is well-illustrated. There will be an
opportunity for discussion and refreshments.
